Awesome, Group 3!

On Thursday, Group 3 began their direct instruction lesson with the fourth graders about the outer planets.  This group did a wonderful job making sure that the students were engaged the whole time.  Throughout their lesson, they included their character Astronaut Annie who would check in with the students to ask them questions through text message.  This was a great idea to keep the students in the lesson because they can relate with texting and the use of cell phones.

Another great thing that group 3 included in their lesson was the use of the green, blue and red planets to not only check for the students understanding, but to use them to see whether or not students agreed with each other or of they were done writing their notes.  The multiple uses for these planets is what was so great about them.  The kids loved the wave them up in the air also which made it even better.

Group 3 had a lot of material to talk about, and they had the students so involved in the lesson by writing their notes, and the students were just naturally curious, they ran too long on their development.  This left them, I feel, rushing to do the other great activities they had planned for the students.  Such as, their guided practice which was a smartboard vortex.  The students, in groups, were given characteristics of an inner or outer planet and they had to decide whether or not the planet they chose was an inner or outer planet.  If they got it right, the vortex would suck in the answer, if they got it wrong the vortex would spit it out.  Thankfully, we have such smart fourth graders that none of the answers they had got spit out!

Finally, at the end of the direct, group 3 tied their whole theme together by having the students write a letter about the outer planets to Astronaut Annie.  To guide the students, and to use for assessment, the students were given a rubric to follow.  Rubrics are a great way to show the students exactly what you expect of them and what they are to include in their work.

Now it is on to the inquiry lesson.  On Tuesday, Group 3 did their inquiry lesson.  What I loved about their inquiry was that astronaut Annie came back.  For the inquiry, the students had to help Astronaut Annie get all of her research of the outer planets back from someone who hacked her twitter.  The students worked in groups, and they had different clues for each of the planets.  The students worked together to fill in their observation book to hypothesize what their planet was.  After they went through the clues, they presented what planet they thought they had to the class.

Next, the students had to unscramble the tweet from the hacker and it turned out to be Ms.P!

I loved the inquiry lesson that group 3 came up with it was so engaging, especially the planet song.  The kids enjoyed every minute of it; they were very excited when they found out who the hacker was also.

During this lesson the students had a lot of writing to do, especially towards the end.  However, the students were well behaved today and stayed engaged in the lesson the whole time.

Well done, group 3 and congratulations!

Now it is on to my group to teach about space technology on Thursday..... that came up fast!
